About the Historic Society

The Spindle City Historic Society began in 1994, when the Silliman Memorial Church was in danger of being demolished. A group of people began to meet regularly in attempts to save the structure. Although these efforts failed to save the Silliman Church, together we decided to establish ourselves as the Spindle City Historic Society to help revitalize Cohoes, prevent other historic landmarks from facing demolition or deterioration, and, above all, to educate the community about Cohoes' past and its enduring value today.

The number of people who have joined in our efforts to restore and preserve historic Cohoes and encourage appreciation of its history has grown considerably. Our members take great pride in Cohoes and volunteer their time and efforts in order to promote a more positive image of our community. We work together as a group to obtain and document information so that others can become aware of the significant history of Cohoes and its people.

The Spindle City Historic Society combines efforts with other local historic societies and civic groups to research our city's past and spread awareness of this history. As a member you can be involved in many rewarding and fun activities. We set up exhibits during community festivals and preservation events so others will be become familiar with our organization and its endeavors. In 1998 we collaborated with other groups to organize the first Cohoes Day, in which tours of the Harmony Mills, Niagara-Mohawk power plant, and concerts were part of an all day celebration of history and community.
