BEACHSIDE BUNGALOWS MAKING A COMEBACK IN FAR ROCKAWAY QUEENS
Bungalow is a form of a Bengali word, and the design for
bungalows came from India, where houses with wide, wraparound porches were
popular with the British army.

Bungalows united simplicity and artistry, and they were one
of the first home styles that seemed truly American. Bungalow is usually
described as a form, not a style. It can have detailing that makes it a certain
style-and experts agree that most bungalows are arts and crafts style, or
simplified craftsman style. A bungalow generally has most of these qualities:
built 1900 to 1929 are one to one in a half stories, overhanging eaves,
generous porch, double hung windows, built in cabinet or sideboard and a small
kitchen.

Historic Preservation in
Queens written by Jeffery A. Kroessler and Nina S. Rappaport highlights
the bungalow of Far Rockaway Beach 17 th Street to 24 th Street. The design
style varies from street to street. Some of the bungalows are in a Spanish
Revival style of stucco with wood trim and green tile roofs, and other are of
English Tudor of brick. The lanes which lead to the beach have permanent
easements for common access to the beach. |
