Vanguard Designer Showhouse Comes to Washington Park
"Grandeur on Washington Park" is the theme of the 2001 Vanguard Designer Showhouse. The newly-restored Uri Gilbert House will showcase interior arrangements from 27 local designers. The house, at 189 2nd Street in Troy, is probably best known to Trojans as the home of the Rensselaer County Council for the Arts from 1965 to 1999. Charles W. Thompson built the house sometime between 1852 and 1854, the third of the five houses that he built in the Washington Park neighborhood. Thompson sold the house in 1856 to Uri Gilbert, who was twice elected mayor of Troy. Russian emigrant Abraham Symansky bought the house in 1911, creating an apartment for his brother and remodeling portions of the interior in a colonial revival style.

The Vanguard Designer Showhouse will be open May 1 through 20, except Mondays. A boutique and art gallery will be open daily, and a cafe in the carriage house will serve lunch. All proceeds benefit the Albany Symphony Orchestra.
